Christmas Card History
The Christmas card tradition began in England in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole first commissioned an artist to create 1,000 engraved holiday cards. Cole wanted a ready-to-mail greeting card because he was too busy to engage in they tradition English custom of writing notes with Christmas and New Year’s greeting to friends and family. With advances in printing technology and mail service, the practice of sending
commercially produced Christmas cards caught on. In 1915, the Kansas City postcard printing company revolutionized the cards by printing them on a 4x6” paper that was folded and enveloped. The same year John C. Hall, along with two of his brothers, created Hallmark Cards, one of the most recognized card companies in the world.
